Install Leak proof Dam Liners in 6 Easy Steps

Agriculture, fishing and forestry contribute more than $155 billion a year to the GDP of Australia. There are over 135,997 farms in the continent covering more than 61% of its landmass. Australia is the driest inhabitant continent. As more than 2/3rd of the land is covered by agriculture, fishing and forestry, collecting rain water is essential to cope up with the need of water. Farmers cannot pour the rain water down to drain. Therefore, it is extremely important for every farm and some industries to have dams and water reservoirs.

In dams, as compared to brick or concrete lining, installation of LLDPE, HDPE Geomembrane and Geosynthetic clay liners do not dig deep into your resources. Dam liner is one of the most economical solutions to eliminate water loss due to cracks, or porous soil. Moreover, the installation of dam liners is less laborious, and time-consuming as compared to bricks or concrete.

Here is a step-by-step guide to install a dam liner:

Outline the dam

If the shape of the dam will be rectangular or square, you should carefully outline the boundary of the dam. For square and rectangular dams angle at the corners have to be of 90 degrees. Boundary should be marked accurately.

Dig out the pondDam liner Australia

Always dig 2 or 3 inches deeper than the desired depth. Edges cut perfectly perpendicular are likely to collapse. An angle of approximately 20 degrees between the bottom and edges is the best. Make sure that the edges of the dam are perfectly levelled. If the outline is to be edged with stones, remove a layer of soil to set stone evenly with the ground.

Prepare the bottom and sides

Bottom and lines should be perfectly level. Remove sticks, stones or any other debris from the bottom and sides of the dam. Any sharp object left there can pierce the liner. Lay a 2-inch layer of damp sand on the bottom.

Spread liner

While spreading liner over the excavation, fold it carefully at curves and corners. Use stones to hold it in place at the boundary.

Add water

Always add water slowly to prevent wrinkles. In case there is any wrinkle, smoothen it out as the dam fills.

Cut excess liner

Leave six inches of the liner overlapping the boundary and cover it with paving stones or soil. Now cut away if there is any excess liner.

There are several reputed manufacturers supplying high-quality and durable dam liners in Australia. By comparing prices before your purchase, you can save a good amount of money.
